The new inter-generational playground in nearby Tulsa, Oklahoma was one of 50 that have been built in cities throughout the United States. These playgrounds were designed and created with the goal of promoting activity for residents in the Tulsa community, no matter what their age and abilities, while also creating a safe, exciting and fun environment for physical activity and social interaction.
On Saturday, October 23, 2014, Dewey Bartlett, the mayor of Tulsa and his wife Victoria along with 200 volunteers built the inter-generational playground in Oklahoma in six hours. The playground, which is home to the typical kid friendly playground equipment, also has an area for a senior fitness station. Those who visit will also find plenty of walking paths and vegetable garden.
As a leading provider of senior care in Oklahoma City, we’re excited that one of these unique inter-generational playgrounds was built in a city so close to us! We share similar goals with the non-profit organization behind the creation of these playgrounds, KaBoom, and love that they are “dedicated to ensuring that kids and older adults get the balanced and active play needed to thrive.”
KaBoom’s founder, Darell Hammond has partnered with President Obama, building more than 50 playgrounds in the first three years of their six year partnership which began in 2011. The movement and rise of inter-generational playgrounds, now being referred to as the Playground Tour, will continue with hopes of giving communities throughout the nation a safe place for residents to build healthy habits and lifestyles.
