What Home Means to the Elderly

By Melissa Hill, 10:15 pm on

It’s common today for people to change addresses frequently during the first half of their lives, moving to take advantage of job offers or to live in a family-friendly neighborhood. Home takes on a different meaning as we age, however, and at Home Care Assistance of Oklahoma City, we’ve found that most seniors prefer to remain in the same location throughout their golden years. Scientific studies show that aging in place offers a wealth of health benefits for seniors as well.

Home Means Security

A Swedish study of elderly adults between the age of 80 and 89 found that while home means many different things to seniors, “security” was the quality cited most often. Older adults feel safer and more comfortable in their own homes than anywhere else. Knowing how everything works in the home makes seniors feel more confident about accomplishing daily tasks as well.

Home Means Memories

Another recent study which examined how seniors interact with their home environment found that when it comes to the personal belongings in their homes, “reminiscence” was the meaning most often mentioned. Having objects around that trigger positive memories is emotionally comforting and mentally stimulating.

Home Means Community

The ability to remain in a familiar neighborhood makes it easier for older adults to stay active and engaged in their community. They’re more likely to establish meaningful relationships with their neighbors and to participate in community events. Seniors become accustomed to visiting local shops, churches and facilities, which not only makes it easier for them to manage their daily activities but helps ensure that they get physical exercise as well.

The overwhelming majority of older adults want to remain in their homes for as long as possible, and by taking advantage of the many support services available, many are able to do so. Services like hourly home care in Oklahoma make it easier for the elderly to stay in the place they love best: home, sweet home.
